What is now Stone Lake was once a deep vein of limestone that was blasted, chiseled and carted away, ton by ton, to be used in construction projects throughout Southwest Florida and beyond. Before that, this land was known as “Piper’s Pasture” and was owned by the same enterprising pioneer who opened Everglades Wonder Gardens in 1936.
